There is no fixed number. The figure usually quoted is 8 to 12 encounters, but studies have reported 6, 8, 10, 12 and more than 20, and the largest meta-analysis found repetition to be only a medium predictor of learning. Spacing and the effort you put into each encounter matter more than how many you collect.
Where the “8 to 12” number came from
The number circulates in language-learning writing as though it were a measured constant, like a boiling point. It is nothing of the kind, just a rough middle drawn across a body of research on incidental vocabulary learning, the words you absorb as a by-product of reading or listening without ever setting out to study them.
That distinction is doing more work than most articles admit. When a study reports that learners needed ten encounters, it usually means ten appearances of the word inside a text the learner was reading for meaning, with no instruction to memorize anything. The learner may or may not have noticed the word at all.
Webb’s 2008 work is a good illustration of how the picture gets complicated as soon as you look closely. Increasing the number of encounters did improve knowledge of a word’s written form, which is to say its spelling. But for meaning, the clarity of the surrounding context mattered more than the raw count. A word met four times in sentences that made its meaning obvious beat the same word met ten times in sentences that gave nothing away.
So the number was never a threshold you cross. It was an average across studies that were, in several important respects, not measuring the same thing.
Why the studies disagree with each other
Six versus twenty is not a rounding error. It is a sign that the studies differ in ways that change the answer.
Three differences account for most of the spread.
What counted as “learned.” Some studies tested whether a learner could recognize the word’s form a few minutes later. Others tested whether they could supply a meaning a week later. Others tested production, which is harder still. A study measuring recognition will always report a smaller number than one measuring recall, because recognition is a lower bar. Two studies can be equally rigorous and report 6 and 20 simply because they drew the finish line in different places.
Who the learners were. Existing vocabulary size predicts how efficiently a new word gets absorbed, because a learner who already knows the surrounding words has more attention free for the unfamiliar one. Age and proficiency both moderate the effect.
Which words. A concrete noun with a clear referent is not the same learning problem as an abstract adjective, a word whose form resembles one you already know, or a word that looks like something in your first language and means something else.
The honest summary from the field itself is that there is no magic number of times a word needs to be read or heard before it is learned. That is the finding, not a hedge around one.
Repetition is a medium predictor, not a recipe
The most useful single result here comes from Uchihara, Webb and Yanagisawa’s 2019 meta-analysis in Language Learning, which pooled 45 effect sizes from 26 studies covering 1,918 learners, and asked directly how strongly the number of encounters correlates with how much vocabulary gets learned.
The answer was a medium effect: r = 0.34.
A correlation of 0.34 is both real and modest. Frequency of exposure accounts for something on the order of a tenth of the variation in what learners actually pick up. Encounters matter. But roughly nine tenths of the outcome is being driven by something other than the count.
This reframes the original question. Asking “how many times?” is asking about the one variable that explains the smallest share of the result. It is a bit like asking how many hours a book took to write in order to predict whether it is any good.

What actually counts as an encounter
The count is only meaningful if the encounters are comparable, and in practice they are wildly not. Passing your eyes over a word twelve times while reading for plot is not twelve encounters in any sense the research would recognize.
What separates an encounter that moves the needle from one that does nothing:
- Did you notice it? An unnoticed word is not an encounter. It is text.
- Was the context clear enough to constrain the meaning? This is Webb’s finding. An informative sentence can do the work of several vague ones.
- Did you retrieve, or did you re-read? Recognizing a word you are looking at is easy and teaches little. Pulling the meaning out of memory before you check is harder and teaches more. The difficulty is the mechanism, not a side effect of it.
- Did you hear it as well as see it? A word stored only as a shape on a page is a word you will not catch in speech. Form and sound are separable kinds of knowledge, and they need separate exposure.
- Was it the same context every time? Meeting a word in one sentence repeatedly teaches you that sentence. Meeting it across varied contexts teaches you the word.
This is why context clarity beat raw frequency in Webb’s data, and why any number quoted without a definition of what counts as an encounter tells you very little.
Reading and studying are two different questions
The 8-to-12 figure describes incidental learning. Most people who look it up are doing something else entirely: sitting down with a deck of cards and deliberately trying to memorize.
These are not the same activity, and the number does not transfer.
Deliberate study front-loads everything that makes an encounter valuable. Attention is guaranteed, since you are looking at one word on purpose. Retrieval is built in, because the card asks before it tells. Under those conditions far fewer exposures are needed per word — the trade-off is that your throughput is capped by how many reviews you can sit through, whereas comprehensible input delivers thousands of low-value encounters for free while you read something you wanted to read anyway.
The two are complements, and the sensible split falls out of the mechanics. Deliberate review is how you get a word from nothing to usable. Wide reading and listening is how a usable word acquires the texture that makes it sound natural — its register, its collocations, the situations it belongs in. Neither substitutes for the other, and the encounter count means something different in each.
Spacing changes the answer more than counting does
Here is the part the number framing obscures completely: ten encounters in one evening and ten encounters across two months are not the same treatment, and they do not produce the same retention.
Cepeda, Pashler, Vul, Wixted and Rohrer’s 2006 synthesis in Psychological Bulletin pooled 839 assessments across 317 experiments to examine exactly this. Their central finding is that the gap between study sessions and the length of time you need to remember something interact: the optimal interval between sessions gets longer as the retention interval gets longer.
That interaction is what makes the original question unanswerable on its own terms. “How many times do I need to see this word?” cannot be answered without “and how long do I need to keep it?” A word you need for a test on Friday and a word you want available in conversation next year require different schedules, and the same number of repetitions delivers very different results depending on when they land.
Cramming inflates your repetition count and your confidence at the same time, which is what makes it so persistent. Everything feels known during the session. That feeling is fluency of processing rather than durable memory, and it does not survive the week.
Stop counting, start scheduling
If encounters explain a tenth of the outcome and spacing explains a great deal more, the practical move is to stop tracking repetitions and let the schedule handle them.
This is what modern spaced repetition does. An algorithm like FSRS estimates, per word and per learner, how likely you are to still remember a given word today, and puts it in front of you when that probability has dropped to the point where recalling it takes real effort but is still possible. Words you find easy drift toward longer and longer intervals. Words you keep missing come back tomorrow.
Under that system, the number of repetitions stops being an input you choose and becomes an output you observe. Some words take three. Some take fifteen. Neither number was decided in advance, and neither needed to be.
What that leaves you to actually control:
- Review on the day it asks, not in a weekly binge. The schedule’s whole value is in the timing. Batching reviews discards it.
- Try to recall before you flip. Even two seconds of genuine effort changes what the review is worth.
- Use the audio. Reading a word silently trains one of the two forms you need.
- Keep the daily load small enough to sustain. Twenty words a day for a year beats two hundred for a fortnight, and the reason is entirely in the spacing.
- Read widely alongside it. That is where the free encounters come from, and where words stop being definitions and start being usable.
